Sugar cookies!

Adapted from Annie's Eats

For the party we had to celebrate my job at a place I've always wanted to work at, Dragon and I had a party, themed and everything. So I made sugar cookies, in white, orange and black. (Okay, only the orange ones were orange!) The recipe I used needed icing, so while the chocolate ones turned out delectably chocolate, the plain ones were a bit sad, but the ones covered in orange icing were perfect. So I adjusted the plain recipe.

I started with Annie's basic recipe:

200g butter
1.25 C icing sugar (1 C if you're making them with icing)
1 egg
2.5 C flour

And added for orange flavour
1 t orange zest
1/2 t orange essence (skip if you want subtle flavour)

Beat butter till creamy, Then add sugar and beat till fluffy. Add egg and beat till combined. Mix in flour, with spoon, spatula, mixer or hand, whatever works for you. Don't work the dough much, and once it just comes together, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for an hour. When you take it out it'll need a little kneading for like a minute or so to make it malleable. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick, and cut. Bake for 8-10 min at 190C/375F. Watch em and get em out when the edges are browning. Spread out to cool.

Then I made a chocolate version:
200g butter
1 C icing sugar
1 egg
0.75 C cocoa powder
1.75 C flour
Beat butter till creamy, Then add sugar and beat till fluffy. Add egg and beat till combined. Sift flour and cocoa together, and then mix it in, with a spoon, spatula, mixer or hand, whatever works for you. Don't work the dough much, and once it just comes together, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for an hour. Wen you take it out it'll need a little kneading for like a minute or so to make it malleable. Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick, and cut. Bake for 8-10 min at 190C/375F. Watch em and get em out when the edges are browning. Spread out to cool.
